Many domestic properties still have fuse boards (Consumer Unit) which look like this, the fuses are rewirable so if the fuse blows the wire has to be replaced. It is likely if you still have an old style fuse board the electrical installation does not comply with the current regulations the 17th Edition. From experience situations which still use the old style fuse board (Consumer Unit) should be subjected to a Periodic Inspection Report to ensure the installation is safe. The new style fuse boards are split load with 2 x RCD's and 1 x Main Switch.

More recent Consumer Units are split load, made up from RCD's Miniture Circuit Breakers (MCB) and a Main Switch. Under the new regulations bathrooms must be protected by a RCD as well as socket outlets and showers. A majority of electrical work undertaken in a domestic dwelling falls under Part P which requires the Local Council to be notified before the work is carried out.
