What is Gent anti-masking fire detection?
Anti-masking is a feature incorporated into Honeywell Gent’s Self-Test detectors.
Its purpose is to check whether the detector’s smoke entry points are clear from blockage during the Self-Test process, helping engineers identify devices that may require inspection or corrective action.
This could happen for several reasons, including:
- Paint applied during refurbishment
- Dust or debris from construction work
- Protective covers left in place after maintenance
- Decorations or labels placed over the detector
- Other accidental obstructions
Rather than relying solely on visual inspection, the anti-masking feature provides an additional check during the Self-Test process to help identify detectors that may require further investigation.
How does the anti-masking feature work?
One important point is that the anti-masking feature does not continuously monitor detectors throughout the year.
Instead, it operates as part of Honeywell Gent’s Self-Test routine.
When a maintenance engineer initiates a Self-Test using Honeywell’s Connected Life Safety Services (CLSS) platform, the compatible detector performs its functional test and also checks whether its smoke entry points have become obstructed.
If masking is identified, CLSS records the result and notifies the engineer carrying out the maintenance, allowing the detector to be inspected, cleaned or replaced where necessary before the visit is completed.
This means the anti-masking feature provides valuable additional information during scheduled maintenance, rather than generating notifications between service visits.
Why can detector masking become a problem?
During decorating or refurbishment projects, detectors are often temporarily covered to protect them from dust or to prevent unwanted alarms.
Problems can arise when these covers are not removed, or when paint, fine dust or other materials partially obstruct the detector without it being immediately noticeable.

Honeywell Gent Self-Test provides a different approach.
Compatible detectors perform an automated functional test initiated by the engineer through the CLSS platform, while the fire alarm system remains operational. Results are automatically recorded, providing clear evidence of what has been tested.
During the same Self-Test process, the detector also carries out its anti-masking check. If masking is identified, the engineer receives a notification through CLSS so the issue can be investigated during the maintenance visit.
Self-Test does not replace the visual inspections or maintenance activities required under BS 5839. Instead, it supports engineers by making functional testing more efficient while providing additional information about detector condition.
